Summary:Environmentally the north polar region is one of the most active regions on the earth, and for ships and seamen, one of the most dangerous due to the combined effects of wind, sea state, and structural icing. It is also the region most neglected and difficult to analyze or forecast because of the sparsity of surface, upper-air, and ocean observations, and less than adequate numerical models. This volume illustrates, with high resolution satellite data and supplementary conventional surface and upper-air analyses, some of the significant recurring patterns of weather and oceanographic phenoma in the Arctic. This volume is dedicated to weather and oceanographic phenomena in the regions surrounding Greenland, and in the Norwegian and Barents Seas. Its purpose is to document Arctic weather phenomena as observed by satellite, and in so doing, assist meteorologists in the development of satellite interpretation skills.
