Summary:The U.S. Navy is defining the baseline performance of the current SSN ASW suite in the Arctic operating environment. This suite includes the AN/BQQ-5 sonar suit (including the Towed Array, the sphere and other sensor and processor sub-systems), communications subsystems and weapon systems (Mk 48 and ADCAP). An effective acoustic measurement program in the Arctic must support the evaluation of how well the different subsystems are able to carry out their assigned functions. Unique aspects of the operating environment in the Arctic include unusual noise properties, unusual transmission effects and an unusual sea surface. This report addresses those acoustic transmission effects which affect system performance due to fluctuations or spreads in the acoustic field space, angle time and frequency.
