Summary: | Approximately 2000 kilometers (approx. 1250 statute miles) of reflectometer data collected within 160 kilometers (100 statute miles) of the ice edge in the North American Arctic were analyzed. The reflectometer signal, which shows a sharp decrease in areas of open water/thin ice, was used to initiate and develop a method to begin an evaluation of the frequency of occurrence and percentage of open water from the ice edge to approximately 160 kilometers (100 statute miles). Comparisons were made within and among regional data sets. Individual regions were not unambigously identifiable by lead width and frequency characteristics. Distance into the pack from the ice edge did not have a direct relationship to the frequency or percentage of open water. The result of no apparent relationship between the frequency of occurrence and precent of area of open water may be due to the restricted samples--restricted in season and total area covered.
