Description
Summary:Operational details and first results of a program to study irregular electron density structure in the auroral F-region using the EISCAT incoherent-scatter radar are presented. Large amplitude, localised, electron density enhancements are observed in active, night-time conditions. Two types of large-scale enhancement are seen: one with large amplitudes in the E and lower F-region, with amplitudes decreasing rapidly with further increase in altitude, the other confined to the F-region with largest amplitudes on the topside. Evidence for intermediate scale structuring associated with precipitation, in some instances, and with probable formation by plasma instabilities in others, is also presented. (Author)
