Description
Summary:The Arkansas Archeological Survey conducted an archeological survey and testing program for the U.S. Corps of Engineers' proposed Conway Water Supply project in the Cypress Creek basin, Conway County, Arkansas. During a 1978 survey of the reservoir area, 26 archeological sites were recorded. Further surveying of the reservoir area, a spillway area, pipeline and road relocation corridors in the present program resulted in recording 53 additional sites within the direct impact of the project. Pedestrian survey and shovel test survey methods were used to discover sites and shovel tests and 1 m by 2 m excavation units were used for testing sites. A study of selected historic log house sites resulted in the following conclusion: The combination of archeological data with oral and written sources made it possible to document and preserve much information on the past inhabitants of the area, their socioeconomic lifestyles, and their historical heritage.
