Summary:This monograph describes in some detail the current state of knowledge of the observed variations in the structural characteristics (grain size, crystal orientation, brine layer spacing) and composition (brine, gas and solid salts) of sea ice as well as the presumed causes of these variations. The importance of these variations in controlling the large observed changes in the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of sea ice is also discussed. (Author)
