Summary:There is a very little information available on the physical properties of the ice cover of the Greenland Sea. This paper reviews what is known about the different types of ice that are believed to occur in this area. It also discusses how the internal structure and composition of these ice masses may differ from those of the more extensively studied ice of the Beaufort Sea and identifies gaps in the present knowledge of the properties of such ice masses (regardless of place of origin). Finally a strategy is outlined for efficiently studying the properties of the ice in the Greenland Sea by combining structural and compositional characterization with limited property determinations.
