Summary:Commercial marine activity will increase dramatically in the Western Arctic commencing about 1980. This is based on the projected rate and extent of exploitation of the natural resources (particularly petroleum). The consequence of increased maritime traffic will be continued growth of demand for the marine services provided by the U.S. Coast Guard. The services required are primarily in the areas of icebreaking, search and rescue, aids to navigation, and marine environmental protection. To meet these demands, a Polar Vessel Information System will have to be developed and operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. (Author)
