Summary:The conditions of the construction of an earth-filled dam on a permafrost foundation have a substantial influence on the thermal mode of the dam during the initial operating period. Construction conditions include the methods and time of construction of a dam; thermophysical characteristics of the soils from which the dam is made; thickness of the layers of soil with which the dam is filled during the summer and autumn seasons and duration of that period; climatic conditions and duration of the winter-spring period, during which dam building operations are postponed.
