Summary:The sea ice program conducted by the Oceanographic Office principally in support of DEEP FREEZE 69 antarctic operations is presented in this report. Methods of data collection and dissemination, ice forecasting, and allied ice projects are discussed. A summary of ice conditions in the Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound is given graphically by 6-day periods from October 1968 to January 1969. Ice concentrations in McMurdo Sound were heavier than those experienced during DEEP FREEZE 68 and were the severest experienced during the past 4 years. Concentrations in the Ross Sea were slightly heavier than those experienced during DEEP FREEZE 68; however, the outer pack edge was significantly located further south toward the Ross Sea.
