Summary:The arctic environment has been investigated with emphasis placed on gathering data that impact vehicle and system operation over, on, and under the arctic ice pack. The area considered was restricted to the Arctic Ocean and contiguous seas. Included are descriptions of the arctic ice pack, ice mechanics, oceanography, and climatology as well as details of the rationale employed in making a determination of the specific aspects of the environment to be considered. Deficiencies in presently available data in the U.S. and Canada are discussed.
