Summary:Presented herein are the experimental and theoretical results of the seakeeping performance of the M-5 icebreaker. Regular wave and random seas tests were conducted on a 96:1 scale model. Heave, pitch and accelerations were measured for the various tested conditions. Wherever it was possible the experiments were duplicated through theoretical calculations in the computer and the results compared. The seakeeping tests were conducted in the Ship Model Towing Tank of M.I.T. The model was free to heave and pitch but restricted from surging. Heave and pitch were measured with linear differential transformer type transducers. Vertical accelerations were measured with strain-gage accelerometers. All responses were transmitted to shore through cables and recorded on both a Sanborn Chart Recorder and a Sanborn Tape Recorder. The regular waves were produced by the Towing Tank frequency standard tape. The random seas were generated specifically for the experiments using the white noise technique. The waves were measured by a sonic probe. The random seas and the ship responses in random seas were digitized and spectralanalysed using the standard towing Tank computer programs. All digitizing and computations were performed at M.I.T.'s Computation Center. (Author)
