Summary: | Objective and subjective techniques often yield contrasting analyses of oceanic thermal structure for the same time period. The causes of the contrast and comparison and verification of the resulting charts are discussed in this paper. Both techniques are outlined briefly and important differences are noted. Comparisons of both techniques demonstrate similarities, differences, and operational usefulness of the final products. Testing using evenly distributed and relatively accurate data demonstrate the potential of each system. Conclusions are made on the role of both techniques in ASW operations. (Author) |
