Summary:Much of the maintenance of equipment and other services at outlying stations and work centers in Antarctica is performed in the open, with no protection from the elements. Where shelters are used, they are often makeshift structures field fabricated from available materials. A study of requirements revealed that shelters are needed for aircraft ground support equipment, maintenance of aircraft, heated field shops, and unheated storage of some equipment, materials, and critical supplies. It is concluded that shelters are needed for all service-type operations at inland stations and outlying centers at coastal stations in Antarctica. The most critical need for shelter, however, is for aircraft maintenance and unheated storage of some equipment, materials, and critical supplies. The Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory plans to develop and evaluate prototype shelters designed to meet these functions. (Author)
