Summary:The purpose of this grant was to investigate some of the effects of anisotropy and inhomogeneity on the propagation of seismic waves by theoretical analysis and comparison with seismograms from the Antarctic ice sheet. Four specific topics were considered: (1) reflection coefficients at an isotropic-anisotropic boundary, (2) surface wave propagation in the presence of a strong velocity gradient, (3) conversion between body wave types upon total internal reflection, that is at the turning point of a refracted arrival, and (4) the continuous bodily conversion of P waves into shear waves in the course of propagation through a strong velocity gradient.
