Summary: | During the late winter months when the subtropical jet stream reaches its maximum intensity, confluence patterns develop between the subtropical and polar-front jet streams. Through the increased vertical velocities and vorticity production, teleconnections between the tropospheric Ferrel westerlies and the stratospheric polar-night westerlies becomes possible. This can cause a disruption of the circular pattern of the polar-night vortex and result in the development of large-amplitude wave trains which precede the occurrence of sudden stratospheric warming events.
