Description
Summary:Accurate prediction of whale concentration areas can enhance commercial whaling efforts. In the Antarctic, baleen whales concentrate at feeding grounds where there is an abundance of zooplankton (euphausiids). Cyclonic circulation in the atmosphere determines corresponding circulation in the hydrosphere. The result is the upwelling of warm deep waters rich in zooplankton. Wind direction is also a factor in predicting whale movements. Whales move against the wind, and the predominance of any wind component in the Antarctic serves as an indicator of whale migration.
