Summary:Preliminary studies of the organisms living in sea ice and the ice habitat at Barrow, Alaska, are presented; this community is compared with the phytoplankton community that occurs in the seawater under the ice and during the open water period. Parameters examined include salinity, temperature, nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations, and primary productivity. The uptake of dissolved organic compounds was studied to determine the heterotrophic potential of the ice community. Other areas sampled included Eluitkak Pass, Wainwright, Prudhoe Bay, and deep water sites 25 to 150 miles offshore. A kelp bed near the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory is described.
