Summary:Sinking a post in winter time is complicated most of all by the presence of a frozen layer of soil. Under these conditions it is necessary to make pilot holes or to thaw the frozen ground in the places where the posts are to be driven. In most cases the pilot holes are made by drilling. The use of this method involves definite organizational-technical and technological difficulties. Bashkir Scientific Research Institute has worked out and tested a spring-loaded wedge for forming cracks in frozen soil. The spring-loaded wedge is interchangable equipment for mobile pile-driving units S-878, SP-49 and others which have mechanisms for testing the verticality of direction of the post, depending on the slope of the basic machine. The spring-loaded wedge consists of a wedge and a shock absorber. The working part of the wedge is a truncated tetrahedral pyramid. The working part of the wedge ends in a conical tip consisting of cutting point with welded plates. The plates, which control the direction, prevent the wedge from changing from its projected position at the initial moment that the spring wedge goes into the soil. The upper part of the wedge in the shape of a box, is a rectangular section. The housing of the wedge is welded from sheet steel and reinforced with rigid fins placed outside the housing.
