Summary:Collision protection is studied for the Advanced Research Projects Agency, concerning the proposed Arctic surface-effect vehicle (ASEV). The approach to collision protection is presented, and various energy absorbing concepts are investigated and evaluated for their possible use in protecting the ASEV in ice-obstacle impacts. Schemes being investigated are the air bag, foam- core sandwich panels, energy-absorbing steering columns, inverting and torsional tubes, fluid dispersal shock absorbers, and tubes which buckle intextensionally in axial compression.
