Description
Summary:The settling of frozen soils on thawing occurs as a result of the conversion of the ice contained in it to water. As a rule, the thawing of frozen soils is accompanied by the pressing out of water forming at this time and a reduction in the soil's porosity, which also directly causes the settling. In the present report, a technique for determining the settling of frozen ground on thawing with the aid of N. A. Tsytovich's odometer is described. In this device, a determination is made of the settling of frozen ground during uniform unilateral (from above) thawing under the effect of vertical, evenly distributed load with the possibility of lateral expansion of the soil and at a given temperature regime of the heating punch. The pressing out of the water forming during the ice's thawing in frozen soil sample occurs only in one direction (upward). (Author) Draft trans. of Akademiya Nauk SSSR. Institut Merzlotovedeniya.
