Summary:Theoretical studies concerning the mechanics of penetration and perforation of a snow covered Arctic sea ice sheet subjected to projectile impact were performed. Penetration problems were treated by a deep penetration theory based on dynamic spherical cavity expansion analysis. In particular, finite compactibility and permanent deformation of both the snow and sea ice target materials were taken into account by assuming a locking approximation for behavior under hydrostatic stress, and response as an elastic-plastic, linear strain hardening solid under shear stress.
