Description
Summary:Two eleven-day current records were obtained in Smith Sound, northern Baffin Bay during September 1968. From the power spectra of the north and east components of these records, it was determined that the predominant harmonic currents occurred at or near the semidiurnal frequency. The velocity components were filtered to remove the semidiurnal and diurnal harmonics and the remainder was smoothed by removing the high frequency components. The long term components exhibited fluctuations with periods of three of four days and amplitudes as great as 30% of the mean flow. The cause of these fluctuations appears to be in the atmospheric pressure field. (Author) Prepared in cooperation with Washington Univ., Seattle. Dept. of Oceanography.
