Description
Summary:The quantitative and qualitative distribution of marine borers in the seas of USSR (the Black, Barents, and White seas, the seas of Okhotsk and Japan) is discussed on the basis of systematic observation data gathered during the last decade. In analysing the fluctuations and changes in the distribution pattern of marine borers, earlier observations and information contained in literature also are outlined and taken into consideration. In addition, the author points out the causes of the occurrence of marine borers, the temporary increase or decrease of their numbers and the damage committed by the pests to wooden structures and vessels. Graphs and figures illustrate the occurrence of the most significant marine borers-Teredo navalis, Bankia setacea and Limnoria-and the damage committed by them. (Author) Trans. of mono.
