Description
Summary:The detailed study of the ice cover in the Sea of Azov is based on data obtained during two or three preceding decades which are, in addition, reevaluated in the light of the latest systematic observations. On the basis of the data, the average dates for the four major phases of ice conditions, namely the appearance, freeze-up, breakup, and disappearance of ice, in various locations of the sea have been calculated and tabulated. Also the frequency percentages of the phases by ten-day periods have been calculated. The dates and frequency percentages, including data on ice thickness, disclose that the degree of iciness is greater and its period is longer in areas enclosed by the continent, as for instance in Taganrog area, where the land mass and colder air facilitate the cooling of water and the formation of ice. Also the effect of prevailing winds and climatic characteristics in various sea and coastal areas is discussed. (Author) Trans. of Moscow Univ. Fiziko-Mekhanicheskii Matematicheskii Fakultet.
