Description
Summary:Lubricants with dispersion media of various viscosities were prepared with arctic diesel fuel and aviation oil MK-22. A great variation of the dispersion medium viscosity had a small effect on the crystal size and form of the Li soap. By increasing the viscosity of the medium from 4 to 30 cp. at 20 degrees and then from 250 to 1600 cp. at 20 degrees, first a decrease and then an increase of the soap filament size was obtained in lubricants thickened with Li stearate. The colloidal stability of the lubricants was improved when the viscosity of the medium increased. The improving rate of the colloidal stability decreased with oil of viscosity 30-50 centistokes. The shearing and breaking strength increased and then decreased according to the variation of their structure, the max. being for oils with 30-50 centistokes viscosity. The effective viscosity at 20 degrees of lubricants and shearing rates 10-1000/sec increased and then remained const. when the dispersion medium had a viscosity of 4-30 cp. The origin and compn. of the oil had a small effect on the structure and properties of Li lubricants. The characteristics of some dispersion media and lubricants are tabulated. Electron microscopic structure and the effect of the medium viscosity are graphically presented. (Author) Edited trans. of Izvestiya Vysshikh Uchebnykh Zavedenii.
