Summary:A procedure is described for applying the cumulative heat flow concept previously developed by the author to the prediction of the depth of freeze and thaw in soils. Step-by-step instructions for performing the calculations are given. The procedure is illustrated by detailed application to selected turfed and paved areas for specific periods at four specific sites: Fairbanks and Kotzebue, Alaska; Thule AB, Greenland; and Dow AFB, Bangor, Maine. Results of the study indicated negligible variation from measured values. Mathematical derivations are presented in Appendix A, and the development of the relationship between cumulative heat flow through the ground surface and thaw (frost) penetration is given in Appendix B.
