Summary:The inadequate study of the icing processes on the railroads and highways of the Siberian Platform is said to be largely responsible for the failure to develop appropriate anti-icing measures. Permafrost and various hydrogeological subterranean conditions are responsible for the 'natural' formation of ice layers, while the construction of road installations is conducive to 'artificial' icing as a result of their interference with natural processes. Greater research efforts in geocryology, hydrogeology and the geological structure of the areas under consideration are suggested, with particular emphasis on road construction in the permafrost region.
