Summary:The effect of ice cover on the progression of tidal waves is discussed, taking into consideration the observational data and theoretical aspects based on them. The observational data that are analyzed pertain to the Eurasian marginal seas, such as the Barents, Kara, East Siberian and Chukchi Seas, including the Alaskan coast. The velocities with which the tidal waves progress in open water and under ice are compared, determining the retardation or acceleration of the waves, i.e. the extinction and delay coefficients. On the basis of formulae derived by various investigators, such as Vize, Maksimov, Kopteva, Krylov and Sverdrup, it is found that the mathematical values of the factors depend upon the ice concentration, thickness, depth of sea, and to a certain degree also upon the geographical location of the water basin and its coastal delineation. Further, these coefficients are interrelated with the amplitude of tidal waves which increases during the period of diminished iciness and decreases during icy periods.
