Summary: | A combination of Gondwanian and Pacific geostructures is the outstanding feature in the area of the general structure of Antarctica's tectonosphere. It predominates in a Gondwanian type platform, resembling those of Africa, South America, Australia and India. Similarly to them, the Antarctic platform is distinguished, on one hand, by the heterogeneity of its substructure, which has been subjected to complex transformations over large areas, not only during the pre-Cambrian, but also during the early Paleozoic era, and on the other hand, by the peculiar formational composition of the middle Paleozoic - lower Mesozoic deposits of the covering strata, almost wholly continental in character and largely carboniferous, with numerous remnants of 'Gondwanian' flora.
