Summary:Eastward-traveling swell developing into breakers and having a period estimated to be between 13 and 14 seconds appears intermittently along a beach on the lee side of Aruba, an island lying off the coast of Venezuela in the Trade Winds. It is suggested that waves, generated by winter storms off the mid-Atlantic coast of North America, propagate southward to Mona Passage where they are refracted in a shoal area and that they then propagate across the Caribbean Sea toward Aruba where they are refracted in a shoal area off the northwest tip of the island and arrive on the leeward coast. Evidence is presented to support this hypothesis. (Author)
