In August 1965 on Sakhalin 8 persons became ill with type botulism. One of these died. The cause of poisoning was eating smoked kunzha. Clinical diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of toxin in the contents of the stomach of the diseased patient and the isolation of toxigenic cultures of the type E botulism causative agent from organs of the corpse, wash water from the stomach of a patient, and fragments of the smoked fish which was eaten by the victims.
