Clinical diagnosis was confirmed by the detection of toxin in the contents of the stomach of the diseased patient and the isolation of toxigenic cultures of the type E botulism causative agent from organs of the corpse, wash water from the stomach of a patient, and fragments of the smoked fish which was eaten by the victims.
