Summary:As a means of identifying the polar objectives of those agencies having economic and scientific responsibilities, approximately 100 persons attended the Department of Transportation 'Long-Range Polar Objectives Conference' at Easton, Maryland, on 4, 5 and 6 March 1968. The conference was opened by the Secretary of the Department of Transportation, the Honorable Alan S. Boyd. Selected speakers addressed the conference, high-lighting the breadth of interest in the polar regions and stressing the common dependence on and need for transportation. The heart of the conference consisted of six-working sessions, each under the chairmanship of a carefully selected polar expert. Participating in each session were persons representing a broad cross-section of polar interests. By means of informal discussions, producing a catalytic effect, a first estimate of the collective economic and scientific polar objectives was brought to light. (Author)
