Description
Summary:The paper substantiates a new scheme of permanent currents in the northern Barents Sea. In addition, new concepts are discussed on the basic factors which determine the general circulation of water in the Barents Sea, the effect of permanent currents on the distribution of ice during the warm season of the year, and a preliminary analysis of the effect of the Deep Atlantic Water on the distribution of ice in winter. Data of the last several years enables us to supplement and refine the existing general picture of the hydrology of the northern Barents Sea. This has previously been based on scant data and, as a result, contained unreliable and contradictory statements, and conclusions. This explains that differences between the existing schemes of permanent currents and between the schemes of currents based on the latest temperature, salinity and hydrochemical data. Hence, this circumstance called for a new scheme of permanent currents. (Author) Trans. of Gosudarstvennyi Okeanograficheskii Institut. Trudy (USSR) v64 p1-32 1961.
