Description
Summary:The results of instrumental measurements of currents in tropical zone of the Atlantic Ocean by expeditions in research vessel 'Michael Lomonosov' in 1959-1963 are given in the paper. The treatment of the data obtained provided the possibility to reveal a powerful deep countercurrent at the Equator between lat. 2N and 2S. This current was named after the great Russian scientist M. V. Lomonosov. A hypothesis was suggested about the origin of the Lomonosov deep countercurrent in the equatorial zone of the Atlantic ocean in accordance with the action of trade-wind field and the formation of deep water with high salinity near South American coast between lat. 16-22S.
