Summary: | In accordance with the IGY program, the Soviet expeditions of the Lena, Toros and Shtorm investigated the hydrological polar fronts in the Greenland and Norwegian Seas. The paper discusses the major characteristics of the polar fronts for each of the seas, comparing them and singling out the specific features of frontal divides, such as the depth reached by the divide, the water masses forming it, their temperatures, salinities and other phenomena affecting the fronts. In addition, these polar fronts are compared with those of the arctic seas and new terminology for the fronts is recommended so as to bring out their specific features. Six tables contain data that characterize and support the findings. Polyarnyi Gidrologicheskii Front v Grenlandskom i Norvezhskom Moryakh, trans. of Okeanologiya (USSR), v4 n2 p267-76 1964. |
