Summary:The 'Deep Transverse System' of this article is, or relates to the Fossa Magna graben of Japan which lies on the direct continuation of a great zone of faulting that passes, west of Vladivostok, through the USSR Far Eastern Maritime Province, then northward across Manchuria. The Fossa Magna itself is part of the system of the Bonin-Marianas arc, comprising zones of high geothermal flux and volcanism, and parallel zones of shallow earthquakes and deep earthquakes. The Bonin-Marianas arc meets the Japan arc nearly at right angles and has therefore been called a 'transverse zone.' The author's 'deep transverse system' appears as a continental continuation of the Bonin-Marianas system, and should therefore be compared with the 'lineaments' that spring from the junctions of active arcs.
