Description
Summary:The report provides information and guidance for actions appropriate to situations involving contamination of the environment by the radionuclides strontium-89, strontium-90, and cecium-137. Two conditions of environmental contamination were examined: an acute localized contaminating event in which prompt action may be necessary to avoid the exposure that would otherwise result; and a widespread, generally increasing, lowlevel of contamination (from stratospheric fallout) that causes a continuous intake of radioactive materials by large numbers of people for a period of years. Special consideration was given to the situation in the arctic region where, because of unusual ecological conditions and food chains, some population groups are exposed to levels higher than those in other parts of the United States.
