Summary:Studies were performed at Houghton, Mich. and Camp Century, Greenland, during 1963 to investigate various modifications of the Rammsonde and to improve its suitability for use in hard snow. The report includes theoretical considerations, a description of the study, and the design and use of the instrument. The Rammsonde presently used by USA CRREL was found to be unsatisfactory for use in processed, age-hardened snow of extreme hardness. It was discovered that the hammerdrop height had little effect on the hardness values obtained, but the hammer weight and the time interval between blows had a noticeable effect on the results and must be taken into consideration when performing ramhardness tests.
