Description
Summary:Continuous study of existing experience in construction for occupancy and industrial purposes in Yakutsk was begun in 1929 by the Yakutsk Expedition of the USSR Academy of Sciences. This institution was reorganized in 1941 into the Permafrost Station of the V.A. Obruchev Institute of Permafrostology of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The importance of this accumulated experience extends far beyond Yakutsk, which is one of the largest towns of the Soviet northeast. The entire central portion of Yakutia and the districts bordering thereon have permafrost and climatic conditions similar to those of Yakutsk. This mades it possible to apply the lessons of construction in Yakutsk over that entire territory, which is largest in area than Germany and France combined. Some of these conclusions may even be applied over the entire permafrost zone, that is, over a territory of ten million square kilometers. That indicates the importance of the study of construction experience in Yakutsk and its great practical significance at the present moment, when many permafrost districts are becoming rapidly growing centers of industry.
