Summary:During the summers of 1961 and 1962 comprehensive surveying of ice movement and mass changes was carried out in the accumulation area, near the equilibrium line and in the ablation area of the White Glacier. Less detailed surveys were made on the Thompson, Crusoe and Baby glaciers. Measurement of surface velocities and their variations with time at several cross-sections, longitudinal profiles and in marginal zones formed the bulk of the work. The lowering or, in a few instances, the lifting of selected surface points and cross-profiles was repeatedly surveyed from fix points on bedrock. The approximate amount of ice flowing through a certain transverse profile can be calculated from the surface velocity and the cross-sectional area (determined from seismic and gravity measurements), assuming that the flow law of ice holds good for the White Glacier. Discrepancies between this amount and the total net ablation below the cross-section are a measure of the ''health'' of the glacier. Such calculations are particularly interesting for the equilibrium line cross-section. (Author) Subcontracted to McGill Univ., Montreal (Quebec).
