Summary:Two Caterpillar D4 Series C tractors were purchased and modified for use as snow tractors in Antarctica. To minimize the need for spare parts, modifications were similar to those of the D4 tractor with 42-inch dual-rail tracks. The two tractors were evaluated, and both performed satisfactorily during 50-hour break-in periods. Consideration should be given to reducing the weight of future tractors, but at the same time retaining the reliability of the dual-rail track system. (Author)
