Summary:A general survey is made of the relation between the exchanges of heat and moisture at the ocean-atmosphere interface on the one side, and the development of extratropical cyclones on the other. The methods of computing eddy and other exchanges are described. With the aid of a system of coordinates in which grid point identify distance from the frontal zone and from the cyclone center, cyclone models are constructed as mean states each representing a large number of individual cases. The stages of cyclone development represented by the models are: the nascent cyclone wave, the warm-sector cyclone, the partly occluded cyclone, the fully occluded cyclone, and the cold-core frontless cyclone. The vorticity equation and the thermodynamic energy equation are used to obtain a diagnostic equation for the vertical velocity and a prognostic equation for the rate of change of the thickness of an isobaric layer, both containing the terms which represent the sensible heat and the release of latent heat. The equations were tested on 10 synoptic situations on the North Atlantic Ocean. (Author)
