Summary:Research was conducted with regard to the structure and energetics of the polar-night westerlies. The 80 degree W cross sections to the 35-km level and the hemispheric charts to the 25-mb level reveal a circumpolar stratospheric system which is characteristically eccentric and bi-polar. These are features related to tropospheric activity. Energies and transports computed by geostrophic Fourier techniques are presented. Perturbations involving conversions usually associated with baroclinic wave activity were identified in wave numbers one to four. Ozone concentrations are shown to be influenced by this wave activity. A brief review is also given of certain climatological studies. (Author)
