Summary:ABSTRACT: Since Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI) are actually one of the most important health problems in Nueva Esparta, Venezuela in children under age five, it was considered relevant to study this age group and describe auto medication and antibiotic prescription practices in ARI by pharmaceutical vendors at drug stores in the vicinity of Barrio de Pescadores, Pampatar, Maneiro Municipality, Nueva Esparta, Venezuela. 53 cases of ARI were found during the inquiry. 55% referred use of household remedies, 34,6% auto prescribe their selves. 51% of the mothers take their children to health consult: 72.7% seek the physician and 18.2% seek the pharmaceutical vendor. The following data was obtained from the inquiry performed to the workers of the three drug stores visited within the territory: 23.8% of the pharmaceutical vendors advise household remedies. The most recommended antibiotics were cephalosporines (66.6%), quinolones (14.51%) and macrolides (4.8%) and sales were produced in this same order. The results suggest an urgent necessity of training health personnel as well as the general community in ARI management, as they do not follow WHO recommendations. RESUMEN: Dado que las infecciones respiratorias agudas (IRA) son actualmente uno de los mayores; problemas de salud en Nueva Esparta, Venezuela, en menores de 5 años, se consideró relevante estudiar un grupo de esta edad y describir las prácticas de automedicación y de prescripción de antibióticos en las IRA por parte de los expendedores de medicamentos en las farmacias del Barrio de Pescadores de Pampatar, Municipio Maneiro, Nueva Esparta, Venezuela. Se encontraron 53 casos de IRA durante la encuesta. el 55% refirió, el uso de remedios caseros, el 34,6% se automedica. El 51,9% de las madres llevan a sus hijos a consulta; 72,7% al médico y 18,2% al farmaceuta.
