Description
Summary:This article presents and discusses the project “A Chip off the old Block”, an educational project developed at the Museu Marítimo de Ílhavo in 2010-2011 for 4th graders of Ílhavo schools. The aim was to learn about the history and memories of Cod Fishing with lines and hooks in single man dories in Newfoundland and Greenland, as well as in trawlers, the main theme of the museum exhibitions. Moreover, it also aims to strengthen ties between generations, and among the community, encouraging children to look for ancestors linked to this activity. The article describes the several stages of the project and its theoretical context. With this project, the local community children had the opportunity to confront the knowledge acquired during a visit to Museu Marítimo de Ílhavo and Navio Museu Santo André with family members or friend’s experiences. Students gathered objects from their families and friends that reify those experiences linked to this activity. A heritage of Ílhavo community, Cod Fishing could be seen in a different way, with the children contacting with real characters of the Great Fishing history and objects that materialize it. It is from these objects that we have the stories of those characters that together create the memories of Cod Fishing.
