Description
Summary:Abstract: The objective of this research was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in students of 5 to 10 years of age in the N.B.S “Francisco Valera” School in Maracaibo Municipality, Zulia State-Venezuela. A fecal analysis was performed in 108 individuals of both sexes between the ages specified; the fecal specimens were submitted to copro-parasitical methods such as: fresh tests with physiological saline solution and lugol and concentration techniques with formaldehyde-ether (Ritchie). The cell-tape test and/or Markey test was performed on the same individuals. The results demonstrated that 87% of the children presented entero-parasites, with a high prevalence of poly-parasitism (75.53%). There was no significant difference among parasitosis, sex and age. However, a slight increase of helminthiasis and protozoosis was observed in children of 7 and 8 years of age. The principal entero-parasitic pathogen found were: Blastocystis hominis (44.4%)*, Trichuris trichiura (41.7%), Ascaris lumbricoides (34.3%), Giardia lamblia (25.9%), Enterobius vermicularis (19.4%), and the complex Entamoeba histolytica/dispar (15.7%). The results obtained are similar to the ones obtained in prior research in schools. It is necessary to point out the high prevalence of Enterobiasis detected in the study, thanks to specific techniques applied in this diagnostic study. A los mismos individuos se les efectúo la Técnica de Graham y/o el método de Markey. En los resultados obtenidos se observó que el 87% de ...
