Summary: | A patronymic is part of every Russian person’s name derived from the full name of its bearer’s father. In subdialects, the patronymic can be coined not only from the full father’s name, but also from its diminutive based on different word-formation models. Besides, the article considers the aforementioned parts of names formed from the bearer’s grandfather’s and mother’s names, and women’s names made on the basis of their husbands’ names. Finally, patronymics can be based on nicknames, categorized into personal nicknames, patronymical nicknames and the ones connected with close relatives.
