Description
Summary:Abstract: To study enteropathogen bacteria, 366 fecal samples of children younger than five years old with acute diarrhea, were processed in the Laboratory of Bacteriology at The University of Zulia. Of these, (13,38%) 49 samples were positive; (12,02%) 44 of them were positive for an enteropatho- gen and (1,36%) 5 for two enteropathogens. Of the 54 isolates obtained, 38,89% (21), 22,23% (12), 14,81% (8) 12,96% (7), 9,26% (5) and 1,85% (1) corresponded to Aeromonas, Shigella, Vibrio, Sal- monella, Campylobacter and Plesiomonas, respectively. Aeromonas caviae, a non- conventional enteropathogen, occupied first place in this study, with 33,34% (18) of the isolates. Regarding the genus Shigella, the relationship among the species Shigella sonnei (14,82%) and Shigella flexneri (7,41%) was 2:1. Of 8 Vibrio isolates, (12,96%) 7 were Vibrio cholerae not 01 and 1,85% (1) Vibrio parahaemolyticus. In relation to Salmonella isolate strains, 71,42% (5) were of serologic group B, 14,29% (1) of group D and 14,29% (1) of group C2. The highest incidence of gastroenteritis caused by enteropathogens corresponded to the age group 0-2 year-olds, with 83,33% (45) of the cases. Since gastroenteritis is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in children younger than five years of age, etiologic studies have great importance because they produce data of epidemiol- ogical interest.
